Frequently Asked
Questions
What is somatic coaching with Laura Beth Wenger?
Somatic coaching is a body-based approach to personal growth that works with physical sensation, breath, posture, and movement. It treats the body as a source of information about emotions, beliefs, and patterns, not just a vessel for the mind, on the premise that lasting change requires more than insight alone. It’s an ideal way to learn nervous system regulation and to address the body-based effects of trauma that talking alone may not be able to reach. “Somatic” comes from the Greek word soma, for “body.” While somatic modalities have become popular in recent years, these techniques are rooted in ancient indigenous wisdom, which understood that we need to incorporate our bodies into our healing work.
How can somatic coaching help with complex trauma or C-PTSD?
Complex trauma often gets stored as nervous system dysregulation, chronic muscular bracing, or dissociation. These are patterns that are stored in the body, below conscious, verbal memory. Somatic coaching works with these patterns directly through breath, movement, and body awareness, building the nervous system's capacity to regulate. and helping people notice and shift stuck survival responses that talk-based approaches alone can miss.
What is NARM coaching?
NARM (NeuroAffective Relational Model) is a somatic (body-centered), relational approach to healing Complex PTSD, developmental trauma, and early childhood wounds. It works with present-day patterns — how you disconnect from your needs, emotions, and relationships — rather than retelling trauma history.
What is C-PTSD and how is it different from PTSD?
Complex PTSD develops from chronic, long-term relational trauma, often in childhood, rather than a single incident. Unlike single-incident PTSD, it typically includes challenges with relationships, negative self-concept, and difficulty regulating emotions.
What is embodied dreamwork?
My approach to dreamwork incorporates my somatic training and is based in Jungian dream analysis or dream interpretation. Traditional approaches can often be purely intellectual, and can feel overly clinical. An embodied approach lets the dreamer feel when we touch into the dream’s meaning. This is often a magical “aha!” moment, when we understand exactly what our psyche has been trying to communicate.
How can dreamwork help with trauma recovery?
This type of dreamwork is inherently trauma-informed, because it presents wisdom from our own psyche. Working in an embodied way helps clients to recognize the strengths and supports that they already have, even in a scary dream. My experience is that when we start to understand what our dreams are telling us, and how they’re trying to help us resolve past situations, our understanding of ourselves shifts too. We see ourselves, and our past, differently.
What is Active Imagination?
Active Imagination is a technique created by Carl Jung as a means to dialogue with our unconscious psyche. Through creative practices like drawing, sculpting, painting, or movement, or divinatory practices like Tarot or the I Ching, clients are able to access levels of self-awareness that can be very difficult to get to otherwise. This works well with dreamwork, or it can be an avenue to explore instead of dreams when they are difficult to remember. You do not need to be an artist to participate-- this is about the experience, not the finished product. Many of my clients are surprised at what emerges when they explore in this way.
Where do you offer sessions?
I offer sessions virtually online across the globe, and in-person at Mangata Wellness in Stuart, FL.
Can I access somatic coaching, NARM, or dreamwork sessions online?
Yes! I offer movement, meditation, somatic coaching, NARM, and dreamwork sessions online to clients throughout the world via Zoom, so location is not a barrier to working together.
How do virtual somatic coaching sessions work?
I meet with my clients online via Zoom. Depending on the type of session, we may incorporate movement, or do a creative practice together. I am happy to work with whatever equipment or materials you have, or I can direct you in what to purchase as needed. Sessions are one hour long.
How do I book a virtual coaching session?
Click here to book a session, or contact me with any questions here first.
Do you take insurance?
I do not accept insurance, since insurance requires a diagnosis and treatment plan that would direct a process that rightfully belongs to you alone. I will provide a ‘Superbill’ on request that you can submit to your insurance company.
Do you offer sliding-scale or low-cost sessions?
I offer a limited number of lower-cost sessions using the Green Bottle method. Click here to read more, or contact me with questions.
What's the difference between your therapy and coaching services?
Both draw on the same somatic Jungian approach — body awareness, dreamwork, working with the unconscious — but they differ in scope and legal structure. Therapy is licensed clinical mental health care: as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, in Florida, I can diagnose and treat mental health conditions, and it's the right fit if you're navigating more acute symptoms, want a formal treatment plan, or need clinical support. Coaching is not psychotherapy — it doesn't involve diagnosis or treatment of mental illness, and instead focuses on exploring and shifting existing life patterns through self-directed growth, with me as a companion and witness rather than a clinician. If you're unsure which is the right fit, please get in touch and I'm happy to help you figure out which container makes sense for what you're navigating.
How do I know if this is right for me?
You can book a free 20-minute discovery call to talk through what you're navigating before any commitment. This is your chance to ask any questions you like about me, or the coaching process.
